The city of Medford, OR is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the state, but surrounded by national forests and beautiful natural reserves, it is an excellent spot from where you can go on exciting hiking, biking, and walking trips to escape from the city routine. If you are looking for the best trails in the area, these are some of the destinations you should check out.

1. Pacific Crest Trail

With a total length of more than 2,600 miles, the Pacific Crest Trail is one of the longest in the entire United States, beginning close to the Mexican border and ending at the Manning Park on the Canadian province of British Columbia. From the city of Medford, the trail can be joined at several spots, including the Cascade – Siskiyou National Monument and the area surrounding Mount McLoughlin. Currently, this trail is open only to hikers and horseback riders.

Although covering the entire Pacific Crest Trail is an endeavor that can take a few months, this spot is nonetheless great for a weekend escape or even a day trip from Medford. Getting to the trail from the city center takes about an hour by car, depending on the trailhead you choose to start at. If you decide to check out the Pacific Crest Trail, do not forget your camera to capture the stunning landscapes you will pass by.

2. Lower Table Rock Trail

The Lower Table Rock Trail is located less than 15 miles north of downtown Medford, making it one of the closest spots for hikers from the city. This trail has a total length of about six miles, making it possible to complete the round-trip hike in about three hours. With an easy to moderate terrain and an elevation of fewer than 800 feet, it is a perfect spot for beginners and recreational hikers, as well as for families with kids.

Apart from some excellent views of the nearby Cascade and Siskiyou Mountain ranges, the Lower Table Rock Trail passes through beautiful wildflower fields and is lined with different interpretive panels where you can learn more about the typical flora and fauna of the region, as well as the history of the Lower Table Rock volcanic plateau. Getting to the trailhead from downtown Medford takes about 20 minutes by car.

3.Enchanted Forest Trail

Located less than 30 miles west of Medford, the Enchanted Forest Trail has a total length of 4.5 miles out and back, passing through rivers, streams, mountains, and a lush forest. Due to its elevation and loose terrain, it is rated as moderate to difficult, making it an excellent spot to visit if you are looking for a challenge and some serious workout surrounded by nature. Getting here from the city center takes about 40 minutes by car.
