Do you sometimes find your car ac not working? Without fully functioning air conditioning, driving can be a whole lot less pleasant, especially during the sweltering summer months. A quick trip to your local Chevrolet dealer will see the problem diagnosed and fixed. Here are four potential causes for faulty air conditioning in your car.

Your Alternator Isn’t Working

The alternator converts the engine’s mechanical power into electrical power for your air conditioner and other accessories. If the alternator runs into trouble, your ac will stop working as well. In this situation, the alternator itself might be failing or the drive belt that powers it might have simply slipped off. You can check under the hood to see if the drive belt is secure before taking the problem to a technician.

Your Refrigerant’s Leaking

Your air conditioner cools the air passing through it by using refrigerant. As you drive, refrigerant is continually converted from gas to liquid and gas again. This process is carried out by the condenser and compressor working in tandem. A chemical effect of the alternating refrigerant states is a dramatic drop in temperature, which then cools the air flowing into your cabin. The refrigerant needs to remain consistent, and perhaps the most common cause of air-con failure is a refrigerant leak. So if your ac stops working, look for an oily substance accumulating around the hose connections, which would indicate a leak.

Your Condenser’s Malfunctioning

The condenser, which is located at the front of your car, cools down the heated refrigerant, turning it into liquid. Condensers can become clogged or damaged by all sorts of debris such as dirt, insects, algae, mold, or small stones. Any of these can take your condenser and ac out of action. You can check your condenser by removing the grill at the front of your vehicle. If the condenser’s clogged, clean it, and the ac should work again. But if it’s cracked or otherwise damaged, you’ll most likely need to replace it.

Your Cooling Fans Are Broken

An air conditioner’s fans draw air from outside the car and bring it through the cooling mechanism into your cabin. Needless to say, if the fans malfunction, this inflow of cool air will come to a stop. Car ac fans can stop working because an external object was sucked into the airstream, jamming or cracking one of the fans. There might also be an electrical issue. A mechanic should be able to diagnose the problem and fix it.
