1. Crater Lake
Since its creation caused by an eruption more than 7,700 years ago, Crater Lake has welcomed visitors from all around the world. Medford is located less than two hours away, which makes it an ideal afternoon destination or longer camping trip to experience the beauty of nature at night. While you’re there, be sure to take a drive around Rim Drive to soak it all in and potentially see wildlife ranging from butterflies to black bears.
2. Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve
If you’re in the mood to appreciate the natural wonders of Oregon while learning a little something, plan a trip to the Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve. While there, you can travel through the interior of a mountain and glimpse the famous Marble Halls. Be sure to book a walking tour to get the most out of your time, and you can plan on seeing cave bats, photosynthetic plants, and more inside the twilight zones of the caves.
3. Redwood National and State Park
With only two hours of driving, you can take a trip across state lines to marvel at the humongous redwood trees of Redwood National and State Park. The area spans over forty miles, and you can find trees taller than 350 feet. While the redwoods are worth the trip by themselves, we’ve also spotted a wide variety of flora and fauna including wildflowers, Oregon grapes, beavers, elk, deer, foxes, otters, and cougars in the parks.
4. Coos Bay
Whenever you’re exploring the Oregon coast, the city of Coos Bay is a spectacular stop filled with enough activities to spend an entire day. Walk along the boardwalk while enjoying some famous Oregon saltwater taffy, or swing by the Coos History Museum to learn more about the area. If you’re a fan of antiques, don’t miss Leaf’s Treehouse Antiques & Collectibles mall; alternatively, a glimpse into the past can also be seen at the Oregon Coast Historical Railway.
5. Umpqua Hot Springs
At just over two hours away, the Umpqua Hot Springs are a hidden wonder and the perfect mix of relaxation and the outdoors. When you visit during the summer, plan on only a brief walk as well as a $5 parking fee. However, if you’re looking to take a dip in one of nature’s hot tubs during the winter, be prepared for a 1.5-mile hike since the gate is closed during the colder months.
