As irritating as they may be, there’s no need to let car dents or scratches ruin your day. Sometimes, a little light polishing can remove a mild scratch or a small dent can be quickly tugged out. For more serious car scratches or dents, the professionals at your local Chevy dealer can have your car looking like new in no time.

Fixing Three Types of Car Scratches

The process of fixing a scratch depends largely on how deep it is. The three depths of scratch are clear coat, base coat, and primer scratches. When only the clear coat has been scratched or smudged, you can often remove it with some gentle polishing using a light rubbing compound. This will remove the damaged layer, leaving your paint looking fresh and unblemished.

If the scratch has gone down into the base coat, more work is required. You may first need to sand the area carefully using fine-grain sandpaper before gently rubbing a scratch remover product on and buffing the area with a microfiber cloth. The deepest scratches that reach down into the primer are the toughest to repair and usually require filling first. Anything more than a clear coat scratch is usually best left to a professional.

Fixing Three Types of Car Dents

Broadly speaking, you have three types of dents in a car: dents in plastic areas, dents in metal areas, and sharp or corner dents. Small dents in plastic areas of your car’s bodywork can sometimes be fixed by using a heat gun or even a hairdryer to loosen the plastic. You can then either try pushing the dent from behind or using a suction cup to pull it out.

Dents in metal areas of bodywork are usually harder to fix without help. A bridge-puller tool or dowel handles used in combination with hot glue can sometimes be used to grip the metal and pull out metalwork dents. Awkwardly sharp dents or dents in the corners of bodywork are the most difficult to fix and will almost always require professional attention.
