The lakes, man-made reservoirs, and rivers around Medford, OR, provide anglers with loads of fishing spots in the upper Rogue River region. The waters here are teeming with fish. Fishermen reel in trout, steelhead, bass, salmon, crappie, bluegill, and yellow perch, depending on the season. The spots below are well-stocked and open all year round.

1. Agate Lake

About ten miles northeast of town in White City, the 216-acre Agate Lake is a favorite destination to catch largemouth bass, yellow perch, black crappie, brown bullhead bluegill, and rainbow trout. The lake has a boat ramp and is open all year round.

2. Emigrant Lake

The man-made 878-acre lake is well worth the 19-mile drive to reel in some excellent catches. The lake is well-stocked with rainbow trout during the spring, and catfish, yellow perch, crappie, bluegill, and bass are common. Here you can fish off the bank or from a boat.

3. Applegate Lake

If it’s bass, salmon, and trout you’re after, the 988-acre Applegate Lake is the place to go. The lake is considered by anglers as one of the best fishing lakes in southern Oregon. Just 27 miles away, the lake is an excellent spot for warm water fishing and is stocked yearly with juvenile chinook salmon and trout.

Local fishermen warn that the heat of summer and the low water levels slow things down a bit, but trout can be caught right through the year. Smallmouth bass is plentiful despite the water temperature. There are three boat ramps for access to the lake, French Gulch, Copper, and Hart-ish ramps.

4. Fish Lake

This 500-acre reservoir on the way to Klamath Falls is stocked yearly in the late spring and early summer by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife with large numbers of rainbow trout. Some years close to 20,000 rainbow trout are released in the reservoir. Fishing here in the deeper waters is still good until the end of summer.

5. Howard Prairie Lake

Just under an hour away, the 2,000-acre lake is teeming with rainbow trout in spring and early summer. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife stocks the lake with fingerlings in the fall and around 15,000 trout every April and May.

The lake also holds a healthy population of largemouth bass. Bass tournaments are occasionally held here. You can fish off the banks or from a boat. Although the lake is open throughout the year, access in the winter, when the lake sometimes freezes, is limited.

6. Rogue River

The Rogue River offers anglers 215 miles of water to fish from. The colder regions are excellent for hooking chinook salmon, trout, and steelhead. A good access point to the Rogue River is at Coyote Evans park. There’s a boat ramp and restrooms.

The Rogue River Valley and surrounding areas is a fisherman’s paradise teeming with a variety of species.
