In 2011, American automaker, Chevrolet celebrated its 100th birthday; something that we here at Airport Chevrolet Buick GMC Cadillac were quite excited about. Now, in 2012, another GM model is preparing celebrate 100 years in existence: GMC. That said, we would like to take a minute to go over some of the lauded automaker's history to give you some insight into why this feat is so impressive.
GMC was formed in 1912, when the Rapid Motor Vehicle Co., which developed some of the earliest trucks on the road, was purchased by General Motors. GM, which is still the company's owner to this day, renamed the group the General Motors truck Company (GMC), which makes it the only brand to be named directly after its parent company.
What's more interesting about the American automaker is that it hasn't always made trucks and SUVs. At one point they were also known for creating solid motor homes as well in the 1970s. In fact, these vehicles were so perfectly made, that they were even featured in hit films like Stripes and Twister.
Of course, it goes without saying that today, the company is more known for their quality trucks and SUVs, once again. The GMC Sierra 1500 is in the top of its class in terms of both sales and performance. Some industry experts even claim that if GMC were to turn into a stand-alone brand, it would be among the top ten biggest in the world.
Honestly though, we'd expect nothing less from the General Motors truck Company. And while this year is especially exciting for the brand, we would also note that it's always a good time to come take a new GMC for a test drive here at 3001 Biddle Road Medford, OR 97504.
