How do you power a battery without charging it? It's simple: Just drive and in certain scenarios the lithium-ion battery stores energy to keep charged. That energy is later used to deliver an electric boost to the engine during heavy acceleration or climbing a grade. And while the vehicle is at a stop, the engine shuts off and the battery-powered motor-generator unit powers accessories, preserving fuel so it can be used later.
